Welcome to Senior Seminar!
Designed to train students in the skills of critical reading and writing at the college level, this course is primarily an analytical survey of fiction (the short story and the novel) and nonfiction (the expository essay and literary criticism). We will also review poetry and its conventions with continued instruction in writing analytical essays on poetry. This course will prepare students for the AP Exam in English Literature and Composition, administered in May.

The 2008-09 Senior Seminar is devoted to exploring the work of Italo Calvino, one if Italy's most fascinating modern writers. We will examine his stories, essays, and novellas through class discussion, written analysis, and creative interpretations. Together, we will follow Calvino as he asks, through his stories, how we connect to other people, how we look at the world, and how - and why - we read stories. This course will run much like a undergraduate seminar, requiring students to engage in nightly close reading, writing, and constant class participation.
This course is an opportunity to get to know Shakespeare, a writer who speaks to issues as current as love, loyalty, virtue, reality, and growing up. The course involves the study of the man and the artist, the Elizabethan poet, and the man for our time. The age he lived in, his stage, and his art will be studied as well as the history of the English language and Shakespeare's contribution to its evolution.
Senior English elective covering science fiction short stories, novels and films as well as utopian literature.
